The holidays are over and back to school is already here! So it’s the right time to think about our four-legged friend and assess his needs. <\/p>\n

So here are our 5 essentials for the start of the school year: <\/strong><\/p>\n

1. Behavior and education courses<\/span><\/h3>\n

Back to school means getting back into the daily routine, so fewer outings and more absences. In order to help your dog get used to this change again, there are behavior classes that can help you and your companion get through this phase smoothly. A good thing, especially if your dog tends to be anxious.

2. Dog sports<\/span><\/h3>\n

Back to school often means getting back into physical activities. This is also the case for our dogs! So let’s get back into good habits now and why not try a dog sport such as canicross, agility, freesbee or even freestyle. Several activities that are still little known are sources of pleasure. A great opportunity to strengthen the bond with your companion! Just be careful to choose the activity that will be best suited to his profile. 3. Medical assessment<\/span><\/h3>\n

  • Back to school is also a good time to think about booster vaccinations, deworming and antiparasitic treatments<\/strong> . Our animals will have spent a lot of time outside, in nature or in contact with other animals, so parasites may be present. Likewise, it is a good time to contact your veterinarian and do your companion’s annual health check<\/strong> . <\/li>\n
  • Also, don’t forget your daily inspection for possible ticks, there will be lots of them this fall!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

    4. Late vacations<\/span><\/h3>\n

    Are you more of a September\/October vacationer? Consider choosing the right boarding facility for your canine friend! Here are a few things to know before committing: <\/p>\n

    • Are the boarding staff trained in dog behavior? Since the dogs will be in contact with each other, recognizing, for example, the warning signals that our canine friends may give is an essential element. <\/li>\n
    • Does the kennel ask enough questions about your companion? Knowing as much as possible about an animal and its particularities allows you to better plan its future stay but also to anticipate possible problems or adaptations that will be necessary. <\/li>\n
    • What activities will be offered and what will your companion’s typical day be like? If your dog tends to sleep a lot, a place with cages and barking dogs all around will not be a good idea. If your pooch has a lot of energy to burn, a boarding kennel with a large natural space is a good choice. <\/li>\n<\/ul>\n

      5. Renewal of accessories stock <\/span><\/h3>\n

      Back to school is also the perfect time to replenish a complete kit of toys and accessories for our pet: toys, leash, harness, accessories for fall\/winter (coat, slippers, etc.). Consider buying locally, for example with the beautiful products from BeOneBreed or second-hand purchases on sites such as Marketplace or Kijiji. Some shelters also have a thrift store with everything your pet needs, in exchange for a voluntary donation. A good way to protect the planet and help a non-profit organization while making your companion happy! <\/p>\n
